At today’s cabinet meeting, the Government of Montenegro has decided that minorities can freely display and use their national symbols.
This has been established by the Draft Law on the Use and Public Display of National Minority Symbols. As the minister of human and minority rights Mehmed Zenka said at the conference after the cabinet meeting, Montenegro is a multi-ethnic state, and in this context using state symbols represents and expresses a membership to Montenegro.
He called to mind that the new draft law was caused by the fact that the current law on national symbols from 2000 has been outdated in some parts, as well as the adoption of the new Constitution of Montenegro and its shortages in the part of the selection of national symbols.
The draft law defines the selection, use and display of national symbols, both publicly and privately, and clearly defined situations where the use of national symbols is prohibited.
Representatives of all national councils of minority peoples and other minority national communities in Montenegro, two representatives of the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights and Freedoms, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Culture and the Ombudsman, were members of the working group for the drafting of this law.
