Raznatovic paid a visit to Strasbourg on 19 and 20 January in order to present the seriousness of the current political situation to MEPs.
During the meeting attended by Raznatovic, EP Vice President Ulrike Lunacek, the co-chair of the Greens in the EP Rebecca Harms, the co-chair of the European Green Party Rienhart Bütikofer, MEP Davor Skrlec and secretary general of the Greens in the EP, Vula Tsetsi, the current political the situation in Montenegro, i.e. the issue of a vote of confidence in the government, was seriously discussed.
On that occasion, as Positive Montenegro stated, they exchanged ideas and presented the possible consequences if the government wins or loses the confidence motion.
The co-chair of the Greens in the EP Rebecca Harms said that the political situation in Montenegro was quite challenging.
“I see that the corruption problem is a huge one in Montenegro, as well as in other countries, and Montenegrin society really needs to fight against corruption. So, all the people who are guilty of corruption must be prosecuted if cases against them are built. I wish my counterparts put fight against corruption on the top of the list of their political priorities”, she said adding that Brussels and Strasbourg are concerned about destabilisation of the political situation in Montenegro.
She believes that MPs for Positive Montenegro have a good reason to think about how to vote in the current situation.
“I think that the conditions for supporting the government should be based on the clear requirements for the fight against corruption, non-selective approach in the fight against corruption, fair conditions for elections and if there are government members who are under suspicion of corruption in elections, then they should not remain in their positions in the coming months. In addition, I believe that a possible feedback created due to the strong influence of the Kremlin in Montenegro should be part of the thinking as well,” she said.
Harms stressed that Positive Montenegro is a pro-European party.
“We have good reasons to be pro-European oriented because Europe guarantees much more freedom and democracy than other possible partners of Montenegro, but the European Union also guarantees a consistent and constant struggle against corruption and for a fairer society,” she said.
The co-chair of the European Green Party and MEP, Rienhart Bütikofer, said that Montenegro was in a very difficult situation and that Positive Montenegro has a great responsibility.
“They are a pro-European party, but the party whose ideals and standards are the fight against corruption and the interest of citizens. I support them whole-heartedly and I am pretty sure they will find a way to combine these two objectives – to have the rule of law and a society without corruption and to be on a pro-European path. In essence, this must be connected and I think it is just what they are trying to do. That is why I support them,” he said.
Representatives of the group of the Greens in the European Parliament fully supports the Positive Montenegro party in strengthening democracy in Montenegro and the country’s path to EU and NATO membership.
“We know that Montenegro is facing a crucial date when it actually will have to decide about supporting the current government. I hope you will find a positive solution in order for Montenegro to continue its path towards EU membership,” said Davor Skrlec, co-chair of the European Green Party and MEP.
