President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatovic, has presented a program to mark the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s independence, uniquely connecting the country’s history, identity, and future.
According to his Office, the program includes a series of initiatives that, through culture, education, environmental protection, sport, and international cooperation, promote the values of Montenegrin statehood.
This year marks two decades since Montenegro restored its independence and President Milatovic has launched a comprehensive program strongly linking the country’s historical heritage with the modern development of society and a clear vision for the future.
The program has been designed to foster a responsible relationship with history and statehood, while also creating space for children, young people, and all citizens to develop a deeper understanding – through culture, art, education, and environmental awareness – of the values on which modern Montenegro is built.
Particular emphasis has been put on the country’s state-building tradition and its continuity, serving as a reminder that freedom and identity must never be taken for granted, but rather actively preserved, nurtured and passed on from generation to generation.
Here are the planned activities:
1.Tribute to the heroes of the Medova tragedy; 2. For the first time, the President’s residence, the Cetinje Blue Palace, opens its doors for the youngest visitors – an encounter with history; 3. Montenegro in the European cultural spotlight – patronage of the Jaroslav Čermák Exhibition in Prague; 4. Promotion of Zabljak Crnojevici; 5. “20.000 trees for 20 years of Montenegro’s independence”; 6. Meetings with diaspora – preserving ties and identity; 7. Commemorating the Battle of Martinici – A cornerstone of statehood; 8. Europe Day and Victory Day – Honouring the anti-fascist legacy; 9. Release of the musical dedicated to Ljubo Cupic, under the patronage of the President; 10. Awarding the Order of Independence; 11. 20 excellence scholarships – investing in knowledge; 12. EU–Western Balkans Summit – A European perspective; 13. Intercultural festival – celebrating the strength of diversity; 14. Under the same flag – the power of sport; 15. The Olympic spirit of Montenegro; 16. ’20 Years in 20 Images’ – a visual history of Montenegro; 17. Memorial dedicated to Montenegro’s independence; 18. Newsletter on Montenegro’s economic development; 19. 13th of July – Statehood Day; 20. Newsletter titled ’20 Development Initiatives’.
